The Brand

ABOUT HILLIER BARTLEY

Hillier Bartley combines masculine elegance with rakish femininity and plays with the notion of mixing English aristocracy with street style influences. The brand celebrates the decadence and glamour of a well-heeled 1970s woman with a rock and roll spirit. The Hillier Bartley woman is a subversive heroine, a grown up with a playful side, resilient and a little rebellious.

Focussing on beautifully made and timeless ready-to-wear and accessories, each piece is made for a unique woman who is indie by heart, irreverent by nature, and maturing into refinement and naturalness.

Every collection is underpinned with established brand codes, including effortless modernity with echoes of a retro era, sharp tailoring, and an original mix of textures and heritage prints such as embossed faux crocodile leather with silky satin and paisley print chiffon. Best-selling brand icons include the Cassette Bag and the Paperclip Earring.

An uncompromising commitment to craftsmanship, considered design, luxurious fabrics and materials, and precise attention to detail runs through each collection.

OUR STORY

Hillier Bartley was founded in 2015 by long-term collaborators Katie Hillier and Luella Bartley. The brand evolved from a personal exploration of how they, and consequently other women, want to dress as they age, with a desire to feel more sophisticated without relinquishing their inner indie kid.

Katie Hillier and Luella Bartley first worked together in 1999. The duo partnered on Bartley’s eponymous label ‘Luella’, while Hillier went on to consult for various brands including Marc by Marc Jacobs, Victoria Beckham, Stella McCartney, and Loewe. In 2013 the pair were reunited as Creative Directors of Marc by Marc Jacobs, which ultimately sowed the seeds for the launch of their own brand, Hillier Bartley.

Luella Bartley: “Hillier Bartley is a very personal project which Katie and I have been working on for years. It is a culmination of everything I have learnt as a designer and a woman and is purely and defiantly about the clothes and fabrics. We have also looked at the women we admire, what we would want to wear and the inspirations that have been close to us for ages. Its ultimate heroine lies somewhere between Ian McCulloch and Katherine Hepburn. It’s about a woman our age, indie by heart, rakish and irreverent by nature, who is maturing into refinement and naturalness.”

Katie Hillier: “Luella and I have always worked together in different ways. Now we are finally putting all our experience into making something that’s a reflection of us, of what we want to wear. I’m really proud of what we’ve made – the craftsmanship, attention to detail and design. It’s been a real labour of love and I am really looking forward to seeing women we admire carrying our bags and wearing our clothes.”
